Charkhelaini Masks

Charkhelaini, a masked dance, is performed anytime within a month of Kalipuja by the Rabhas living in the forests of Jalpaiguri and Coochbihar districts of in the northern part of West Bengal. The most significant of the three masks used is one made of plaited bamboo and whom the Rabhas call both Chandi and Char-gog. The dance and the mask have ritual significance and special care is taken not to show disrespect to the dancers or to this mask for fear of incurring the wrath of the fearsome spirit inhabiting it. After the performance is over, the bamboo mask is cut into pieces and thrown in the river. A dancer with the wooden mask of an old man dances with Chandi to provide comic relief; he is called the Char Pagal (Cha- fool). A bear mask fashioned from a large gourd is also associated with this dance and is worn at the time of collecting donations from the villagers for the staging of the festival. The masks are tied on a cloth wrapped round the head and face of the dancer so that they do not touch the skin at all.
